Why this matters in the Arctic

Long distances, thin infrastructure and few response resources mean an incident in the North escalates quickly. A landslide over a single road, an avalanche, a power outage, a grounding far from the nearest vessel — each has consequences out of proportion to its size, and often happens where no local sensor network exists.

At the same time the ground itself is changing. Thawing permafrost, shifting snow and precipitation patterns and coastal erosion act on roads, quays, buildings, pipelines and power lines that were built for a different climate. Monitoring that change is a resilience question as much as a research one.

We are looking for ideas that reach an operational user: civil protection, municipalities, grid and transport operators, coastal administration, or the companies that serve them.
